Viltrox announced the availability of a 50mm F/1.8 lens for both Nikon and Sony mirrorless cameras. This adds to the growing number of third-party lenses available for full-frame mirrorless body.

Viltrox’s new lens weighs in at 350 grams (12.4 ounces), compared to the Nikkor Z50mm f/1.8 lens which weighs 415g (14.7 ounces). According to the company, the bright f/1.8 aperture allows for better control of depth of field and is well-suited for low-light conditions.

It is compatible with full-frame Nikon Z-mount and Sony E cameras. However, it can also work with APS-C models that will provide a 75mm equivalent focal length. It is composed of 11 elements divided into 10 groups. These include one extra-low dispersion, two high-refraction, and two aspherical elements.

Viltrox claims that the extra-low dipersion element reduces color distortion and chromatic aberrations. The high refractive elements control spherical aberrations, and reduce distortion. Viltrox claims that the lens’ autofocus motors reduce errors when the photographer reviews and composes using live view and bring “precise, smooth” focus to the shots.

A nano multi-layer coating has been applied to the lens to suppress ghosting and flare for “greater contrast” and color fidelity when shooting in harsh lighting.

The new 50mm lens is identical to the Canon RF mount 85mm f/1.8 autofocus lenses, and has an aperture range from f/1.8 to f/16. The lens’ minimum focus distance is 55 cm (1.8 feet), and it has a 55mm front filter.

An integrated manual aperture ring can be used to select the aperture. This is called “tactile exposure control”. The ring also features an “A” position that allows for automatic, camera-based aperture selection. A micro-USB port is also included in the lens, which can be used to download future firmware updates.

The new 50mm F/1.8 lens can be bought through Pergear, one distributor of Viltrox, at a price of $380.

Viltrox also released an E-mount option for 35mm f/1.8 lenses, which is compatible with the 50mm f/1.8 lens. This was available earlier in the year for Nikon Z-mount. Pergear sells both mount options for as low as $400 on its online store.
